Non-Disgusting Produce, Now On Sale!

Tired of getting up at the crack of dawn to elbow Danny Meyer away from your favorite strawberries at the Union Square Greenmarket? Elbow, you shall no longer!

Astoria and LIC now have our own greenmarkets starting this week.

Long Island City's is on 48th Street & Vernon on Saturdays from 8-3.

Astoria's is on 31st Av betweeen 12th and 14th streets (huh?). On Wednesdays from 8-5 (what?). Talk about getting the short end of the asparagus.

It'll be worth the bike trip. See you there!

How's the produce at Top Tomato? I'm moving to Astoria in early August and I loves me the fruits and vegetables. That place is really close to where I'll be living. I also love the farmer's markets (you call them greenmarkets out here) and it's great to know there is one in Astoria. Great blog by the way! --Meg

Thanks Meg.

I don't know actually. I don't food-shop much north of 30th Av. And to be fair, 30th Av has some decent produce. You'll have to let me know when you move there!

Can't believe it has taken this long for astoria to get a greenmarket.

Top Tomato is fabulous. Trade Fair (ditmars/37th or thereabouts) is also recommended. Both stores are very inexpensive and I love them. Also, they're both open 24 hours! Yucca and batata at 4AM.

very cool! inconvenient for those of you with "normal" hours, though. but just fine dandy with me :)

Top Tomato and the Trade Fair on Ditmars Blvd. are excellent for anything you can't get (or forgot to get) at the Greenmarket, or for anything you have to get between Greenmarket days. I pick something up there when I'm on Ditmars Blvd. But in southern Astoria the best places are on 30th Ave.: Elleniki Gonia on 35th St., United Bros. on 33rd St., and Elleniki Agora between 32nd and 33rd Sts. Checking out the supermarkets and the Bway stores doesn't hurt either--my only hard-and-fast rule is never buy bananas at the Associated on 31st Avenue.

Astoria may be having the short end of the asparagus in the location of its Greenmarket, but look at it this way: once you've hit the Astoria Greenmarket you're almost at Socrates Sculpture Park.

Oh, yes, my other rule: never buy shallots at the Key Food on Newtown Ave. It's not that they're bad, but they're outrageously overpriced.

One of my favorite food shops in Astoria is the Italian deli on Broadway between 36th & 35th. I love to pick up little treats there. I'll write about it sooner or later. But produce can be tough. Maybe one of you can let me know how the Astoria Greenmarket is.

Thanks to all, but expecially to lauren and ladywithpans for their comments about Top Tomato and the Trade Fair on Ditmars. I'll be living only a few blocks from each so it's great to know such good places are so near. Thanks to everyone for your comments on food! I am so excited to have *choices* after four years of minimalism on Long Island. Having lived in Berkeley, CA before that, I found the lack of food choices on LI rather disappointing and frustrating. Astoria will be a welcome change! Can't wait to explore my new neighborhood, markets, greenmarkets and fabulous restaurants all. :)

I just came back from the Astoria Greenmarket(I live up the street from it, why shouldn't I go). Anyway, it's really small (only 3 vendors) but it's cute. There was someone selling cherries and honey, another was selling a few veggies and fruits (a little pricy too I might add) and the 3rd had a great selection of cooking greens, herbs, summer squashes, and peaches.

Speaking of veggies...LIC/Ravenswood now has it's own CSA and we picked up our first weeks share yesterday. Check it out if you live in the area. www.ravesnwoodcsa.org

PS. Love the blog, Joey!

Hey K - thanks for the report!!!

Turns out its http://www.ravenswoodcsa.org/. I will *certainly* look into that. I'm really interested in the CSAs. If any one knows if Astoria has one, let me know...will write more on that.

Happy eating!

Astroia does have one. www.queenscsa.org Pick up is at the ARROW Community Center. My understanding is that they have been around for a while and their season last from June to December.

BTW.. thanks for the spelling correction on the website. My fingers work faster than my brain. :)
