Aces
The owners of this seductive little bistro hope to entice Astoria and Long Island City locals with creative cocktails (cigar-leaf mojitos) and Latin-accented dishes (mole-sauced short ribs). 32-07 36th Ave at 32nd St, Astoria, Queens (347-495-6991)
Why haven't i heard of this joint before? Does anyone know how long its been around? I need to set up a recon mission...

Just went to check Aces out. Didn't have the cigar leaf mohitos -- only a great pineapple capirinha and blackerry mohito. Says in the next week they should have a list up of more house cocktails. Dinner was really good. For appetizer we ordered the mushroom risotto to share and they brought it out in two nice individual portions -- well sized for an appetizer. And it was delciious. Earthy Mexican mushrooms and a perfectly textured risotto. Then I had the short ribs in the mole -- tender, delicious (the sauce was like something my mom makes) and my husband ordered ordered the braised lamb shank -- also good.
The food had a comforting, almost home-made quality about it-- yet everything was just that much better . Satisfying. Definitely worth the efffort and price. We spent $58 on 3 cocktails, 1 appetizer and 2 entrees.
So this is kind of unrelated, but I just went to this brand new cafe called Liceth's Corner Cafe on 30th Avenue and 47th Street. Best omelettes in the neighborhood (!!!), and SO cheap! Also, Liceth (the owner) is probably one of the most welcoming, friendly faces in Astoria. They're still ironing out some kinks (limited menu, only Liceth and her sister are working)but really, if you live nearby, go check it out! This is a great little breakfast spot. The coffee is great too! AND they have free Wifi. Just wanted everyone to know about this great little addition to Astoria...
thanks so much rosie, i'm not too far from there! as soon as it's not tundra like conditions, i may have to give brubch a shot over there.
i went to aces last night -- it's been open since december 8. the bartender was sick, so no cocktails, but the butternut squash soup was very yummy and the short ribs were *great*. i wasn't too keen on my dessert (apple tart), but that's really ok.
of course the best way to attract people is doing this class of publicty, beside who don't like a good "mojito" or a Viagra Online.
