Astorian Weekend Edition 18.12.08

Here we are: it's crunch time for holiday shopping! Get your last full weekend of gift prep done locally.

If you're on a budget but still want something original, try locally grown Firelight Jewelry for that sweet lady in your life.

Clash Culture (34-03 34th St) is a pretty new fresh shop on 34th St. Find some slick original tees or some cool kicks for the little bit funky friend or
relative.

Don't forget your furry friends either! The welcoming folks over at The Jumping Bulldog (28-10 23rd Avenue) are more then happy to outfit Fido in some new gear.

For that hard to shop for style maven, try Site (35-11 34th Ave) for eclectic home goods. They are definitely good to keep in mind for random knick knacks too, my weakness!

Something a little different, you can find it at The Little Soap Shop (2207 36th St). Help that certain someone smell delicious and pamper them while your at it!

Still looking? Don't forget about some old standbys: Candy Plum , Kristees, and Loveday 31

There's a big one on Sunday! At Waltz (23-14 Ditmars) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., enjoy the Second Annual Holiday Flea Market. One of a kinds and local arts galore! And there is, of course, food and drink :)

End it all off at one of two holiday parties! Both L.I.C.Bar (45-58 Vernon Blvd) and Rapture (34-27 28th Ave) are holding an evening of merriment on Sunday. L.I.C. Bar is hoppin' from 8 to 11 p.m. with free grub. The Rapture fete also starts at 8 p.m. and with a new unwrapped children's toy, you get a free holiday cocktail and an entry for the big midnight raffle.

Now go out there and help this durn economy!

A free and fun activity for you- go now and vote for the Best and the Worst of Queens. Be heard!

Astorian Weekend Edition 03.04.08

Tonight SITE's (35-11 34th Ave) having a party. Come out and celebrate this adorable shops 1 year anniversary with DJ's, wine, artists and specials. Festivities are going on from 7pm -10pm.

Friday night yuck it up at the new Mezzo Comedy Club (33rd St @ Ditmars - yes, it is Mezzo Mezzo). Matt Taylor, the manager and funny man himself says "We are the first and only full-time professional comedy club NOT in Manhattan." Enough to get you there? If you RSVP to rsvp@mezzocomedyclub.com, you can avoid the $10 cover too. This week get there by 8:30 p.m. to be entertained by Jesse Joyce.

Grab a pal and head to Fatty's (25-01 Ditmars) to check out their new menu and charge it! The gang has hit the big one and are now plastic friendly! No need to run to the ATM ahead of time anymore.

Il Bambino (34-08 31st Ave) has finished getting prettied up so if you're in the area, check out the cute new "paddle wall" and of course grab some soup or a sammy!

Our fabulous Foodista weighed in on the new Angelo & Sons Bakery (22-09 Astoria Blvd.) Definitely improved all around; go for the Linzer and stay for a "themed" sandwich.

And call me crazy, but this sounds AWESOME! Albeit it's LIC and all, but still, not far for us :)

Astorian Weekend Edition 10.01.08

On your way home tonight you should stop in at A Town Hall Meeting - To Address Community Concerns at The Museum of the Moving Image (36-01 35th Ave) from 7:00 to 10:00pm. Along with Michael Gianaris, you'll find over a dozen New York City agencies in attendance ready to "try" to answer your questions and concerns.

Shop your way into the weekend at SITE (35-11 34th Ave) before its sale ends on the 21st. They are trying to make room for spring things already by marking down all furniture and lighting 20%!

Saturday at 4pm, join the gang from Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee in celebrating their 1 Year Anniversary at Sunswick (35th & 35th). They've done a lot with their freshman appearance on the scene. Definitely check them out for some greener transportation options!

Later on Saturday, Flux Factory (38-38 43rd St) is having a Closing Party & Catalogue Launch.
The NY NY NY event is described as "new and old treasures from the heart of the most loopy city - New York City." Sounds like a good time to me!

Sunday at noon at The Chocolate Factory (5-49 49th Ave) check out Tere O'Connor Dance - Rammed Earth. Buy your tickets ASAP; apparently this is a hot one and seats are extremely limited. For $15 each, you get to observe dance derived from architecture?! Fitting for an area where new structures pop up seemingly overnight.
