"The try-anything looseness of Montiel's meta-literary directing style -- inserting text from the shooting script in between scenes, for example -- is part of its appeal. Each time the veteran cast blows on, however (Dianne Wiest as Dito's mother, Robert Downey Jr. as the adult Dito), the film takes on an actory self-consciousness. When it stays focused on its young cast, "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" exudes a scrappy, John Cassavetes-like vividness."
I look forward to seeing how well the film does in the eyes of the Sundance jury.

Read a more detailed description of the film which refers to Astoria in the 1980s as being a "tough neighborhood", as well as having gangs and mobsters. As someone who lived in Astoria during that time, trust me, it was not tough, frankly, it was boring and as for gangs and mobsters--they must have been confined to small areas because I sure as hell didn't see them roaming the streets when I came home late at night from the City.
I saw this movie at SUndance & it is f'ing UNBELIEVABLE!!! I too gawked at the notion of "tough gritty Astoria" but whoever described it like that is an idiot. A guide To recognizing Your Saints is absolutely heartbreaking! NOTHING I've seen (maybe ever) in a New York film. COMPLETELY HONEST & truthful. I grew up around Astoria Park in the 80's & this movie is so right on it actually gave me the chills. I heard it will be in theaters in September. Only place I found any type of website was on MYSPACE! FUnny.
