Sweet Afton Opens

I love it when Astoria gets play in Manhattan-drenched newsletters, and today's Urban Daddy revealed the official opening of new speakeasy-ish bar, Sweet Afton, which we've had our eye on.

The owners, who've also started West Village bar, Wilfie and Nell, spread their philosophy of serving "good drinks and locally sourced food" to this new Astorian addition.

It was exciting to take a peek at their no bull*&%$ menu, which includes beer battered fried pickles with smoky sauce, Irish sausage wrapped and baked in puff pastry and their signature burger. You could sneak a peek at the menu here, as well as see a slide show of their digs. Read the full UD write-up here.

We'll have some more input from Mackenzi next week, but these deets should tide your curiosity over in the meantime.

Agree - Meg and I went there last week and LOVED their fried pickles. The atmosphere is awesome and the staff is as friendly as can be.

Food is greasy. Drinks are typical watered down nonsense. Staff tries so hard to pretend they are working in manhattan and make it clear thats where they'd rather be - comes off as pretentious and unfriendly. Sorry I wasted my time and money there. Pass on this one - head over to Dutch Kills if you cant hop it into the city.

This place is exactly what Astoria needed. It has a charming yet non-pretenious atmosphere, and it is one of the only (THE only?) bars in the neighborhood that isnt either 1.) greek, or 2.) a dive sports bar, and that has beers on tap!! ... Please disregard the previous comment --- the food is not greasy, its simple and tasty (it is a bar, not a organic health store), and the beers are DELICIOUS. 10 beers on tap!! ... try the Amber.

Hahah maybe a post from the competition...

All i know is I walked into this this place while they were still under construction before they opened and the management was warm friendly and happy to give me the scoop. Nice to see the choices in the neighborhood expanding. This place has something about it that just draws you in. Ill be checking out this week.

OK - so I'm late to the commenting party here. But I just had to tell everyone that they mix a really nice Old Fashioned. That's my litmus test.

I think that the fact that they serve good drinks and local dishes makes this place an excellent option to spend a good time. I also like it because it's very fancy. I heard they invented a new drink known as viagra online
