Bare Burger: The Details

BareBurger

So, I contacted the proprietor of the coming Bare Burger, and come to you with lots of info! Here is what I've learned:

Bare Burger is an organic burger company, started by some friends who were born and raised in Astoria and wanted to open up a tasty eatery in their hometown.

Their menu is going to offer a wide variety of organic burgers: grass fed meats, including Piedmontese beef, bison, elk, ostrich, lamb, turkey, chicken, and even a veggie burger. Traditional sides like fries will accompany the burgers. I expect there will be other kinds of apps and sides, too. They estimate that close to 90 percent of their menu is organic, from the meats, veggies, bread, cheeses and salad dressings.

The fries are cooked in 100 peanut oil and cut fresh daily. The burger will be offered in three different ways: on a bun, in a wrap, or wrapped in iceberg lettuce. They also have plans for a healthy smoothie and even an organic beer menu, once the liquor license is had.

Pricewise, a standard bareburger (meat, special bareburger sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cheese and fries), will be about $10 or so. This is for an organic meal.

It's very cool what they are doing with the inside of the space. According to the owner, "A good majority of the decor consists of salvaged materials. For example, the ceiling is stained and glazed salvaged barn siding, the table tops from storm ravaged trees, the floors are bamboo, cork bathroom tiles, the chandeliers are made from spoons and forks from New York City Hotels, circa. 1930's, booths upholstered with 100 percent biodegradable fabric." Additionally, a lot of their equipment is also energy rated efficient.

They aim to make the best burger possible, and organic suits their needs in this respect.

I, for one, am looking forward to this! We'll let you know when they open.

This is right near my apartment - and I drool when I walk by (on my way to the gym). Burning the calories early so I can indulge in some big-beefy burgers and peanut oil soaked fries. :)

Did they say anything about their beer selection?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. At this point, I don't know when they will open (except "Spring 2009") but will let you know when I find out. Also, don't know about the beer selection - I know getting a liquor license can be quite an adventure in this town. Whatever I learn, I'll pass on to you!

This is great news. I have celiac disease and require a gluten-free diet. It would be great to walk into a restaurant and have the option to have a burger without a bun and not get a second look at my request. Also, it is important that fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer in order to make them truly gluten-free. If they are only serving burgers and fries then this looks like a good gluten-free addition to the neighborhood. Thanks for the info.

A hunk of meat, greasy fries, and a milkshake will still pack on the pounds and give you a heart attack, regardless of how Organic this place is touted to be. I'm not sure i get the point?

Well, organics are supposed to be good for the animal, the environment, *and* you.

i guess it's the *and* you, i'm not sold on.

I believe the meat is grilled, not fried.

There are myriad meat and "meat" choices: beef, ostrich (lower in fat if that's your thing), veggie, and more.

Fries are fried in peanut oil. Not my fave, but I think it meets a lot of people's requirements. Peanut oil has a high smoke point, which is helpful. You're not getting all sorts of nastiness in your food from oil that has burned. The fries are also from real potatoes, not reconstituted potatoes. You can get something other than ketchup to dip your fries in, too, which matters to some.

You can get a 7 grain bun, which is lovely. A lettuce wrap is also an option, which is beneficial to those who have issues with gluten and those who just want to avoid the extra carbs.

Milkshakes are made with real milk and ice cream. Of course, you can choose water - no one is forcing the milkshake down anyone's throat.

As much as possible is organic, which really is better for you, not to mention the animal, as far as the meat goes. And the environment. I believe the meat is grass-fed, too.

I would agree that if you ate this meal every day, it would not be the best thing for your health. An occasional treat, once or twice a month is not going to hurt.

You ask "I'm not sure i get the point?". The point I think is, in part, options and a healthier option than fast food or CAFO corn-fed conventional beef, which is certainly not in your health's best interest.
