How Attached are You to the W?

If you're like Councilmember Vallone, a lot. Vallone, CB members, and many Astorians gathered yesterday morning at the 30th Av stop to protest the proposed permanent termination of the nine-year-old subway line, the W.

Losing the W is not the end of the world as suggested by the Gazette. Portions of the article are completely sensational -- like suggesting that the loss of the W will force people to drive into Manhattan. That's ridiculous.

Here is a link I found to the MTA document that clearly explains the impact of losing the W (see page 36 of the PDF, page 7 of the document):

Everyone seems to overlook that the N replaces the W while the Q gets extended to Ditmars terminal under this plan. Service within Astoria will be similar to pre-cut levels with the exception of Astoria-Lower Manhattan trips (requiring a transfer to the R).

I personally don't support the proposed MTA changes and have signed the petition, but I think it's important to read the facts for yourself and assess whether statements made by the press/politicians are factual or simply inflammatory.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree that this is being blown out of proportion.
