Welcome 2 New LIC Eateries

The already tough question of "where to eat in LIC" got even tougher with the entrance of two new promising restaurants, Testaccio and El*Ay*Si. Both places are located on Vernon Blvd--actually just steps away from each other. The competition will be fierce but hopefully both places will get a piece of the proverbial pie. Astorian Weekend Edition 22.10.09

What a wonderful week! Such great weather to explore Astoria and more this weekend. Start this Thursday with local artist Juan Pablo Bohorquez’s art at Modern Spaces Reality. Aspiring to topple Queens' most enduring political dynasty, an upstart City Council candidate in Astoria will have more than double the campaign cash of Democratic incumbent Peter Vallone Jr. in the race's final stretch.

The camp of Green Party contender Lynne Serpe plans to use her $100,000 war chest - about $80,000 from public matching funds - to inundate voters with mailings and TV commercials ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Vallone, meanwhile, said on Tuesday that he has just $40,000 left after forgoing matching funds - arguing their use by an incumbent wastes taxpayer dollars.

American Songbook at Frank Sinatra

Some of the amazingly talented kids from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts stopped in other day to tell me about their upcoming show, American Songbook. The variety show is open to the public and features classic American standards and pop hits performed by the students. Ticket price includes the show and light food. Check out some super local talent and an amazing building- I’ve had the good fortune to be able to check it out and it really is a stunning addition to the area!

Two Upcoming Halloween Events

I just got an email from the organizers behind Gather at the Gantries. Thanks to the coming crap weather this weekend, they are going move everything inside. I am not pleased with mother nature this weekend.

AM&A is sorry to report that the weather is reported to be inclement and quite chilly on Saturday so the festival has been moved to Shillelagh Tavern in Astoria. Artwork will still be displayed. The schedule of bands to perform is subject to change but the line-up is generally the same except for one or two acts and we will start an hour later.

Astorian Weekend Edition 15.10.09

Well, it's mid-October already, and it's hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner!  Halloween is almost here, changing our clocks is coming up, and it keeps feeling like fall around here.  Enjoy these cool, crisp days around neighborhood, perhaps enjoying a bowl of warm soup at Il Bambino (34-08 31st Ave), a hot potato at La Papa (25-13 30th Ave), or a pot of tea at Himalyan Teahouse (33-17 31st Ave).

Thursday night brings a fashion event to Astoria via KrisTees and Candy Plum.  Their second annual Fashion: Astoria Style show should be a lot of fun, taking place at Central Lounge (which has sushi!). Doors open at 6 p.m., show begins at 8 p.m., and entrance comes with your RSVP (astoriafashion@gmail.com or call 718.721.2299).  Central Lounge is at 20-30 Steinway.

The first game of the ALCS and NLCS (Baseball Championship Series) starts Friday, and the Yankees are in it to win it. Newcomer YOLO is a nice place to catch the game (by the way, they have a $22 happy hour special that includes a pitcher of beer and a large plain pizza), and I'm sure neighborhood favorites like the Irish Rover and McCanns will be busting with excitement to see the home team triumph. The ALCS games (Yanks vs Angels) take place on Friday and Saturday, with a game time of 7:57 p.m. for both.

Head over to Socrates on Saturday for their Halloween Harvest Festival. Fun for all for sure. That night the Astoria Symphony kicks off their season with a concert of Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Schnittke at the new Frank Sinatra School for the Arts (35-12 35th Ave).

Finally, Sunday hails the start of Rioja Restaurant Week.  Both 718 (35-01 Ditmars) and Sweet Afton (30-09 34th St) will be participating.

It's My Park Day at Queensbridge Park.

Queensbridge is participating in It's My Park Day, Saturday, October 24th. Join in the citywide celebration of making our favorite parks ready for the winter. Press release follows:

ASTORIA/LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. – Winter is right around the corner! Join with Green Shores NYC and the Friends of Queensbridge Park Committee for It’s My Park Day (IMPD) on Saturday October 24th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. IMPD will take place rain or shine.

The event will give residents of Long Island City and Astoria a chance to spruce up Queensbridge Park after an event-filled summer. Within a few hours, volunteers will take part in several projects, including painting, planting and general park cleanup. Arts and crafts activities for all ages will round out the day.

Queensbridge Park is on the waterfront and provides breathtaking views of the Queensboro Bridge (also known as the 59th Street Bridge), East River and Manhattan skyline. It’s heavily used by children, families, cyclists, runners, and amateur sports teams. Built in 1939, the park features baseball fields, a multi-use field for soccer and football, volleyball and handball courts, a marked bike path, a playground and barbeque areas. Over the past few months, Queensbridge Park has been the site of a festival celebrating the Queensboro Bridge’s Centennial, a concert by the Metropolitan Opera, puppet shows, and innovative dance and theater performances.

Everyone is welcome, but children must be supervised by an adult. This is a great opportunity for community organizations, businesses and schools to volunteer as a group in their community. Volunteers are advised to wear old clothes and shoes and to be ready to roll up their sleeves and have fun! Refreshments will be provided for all volunteers.

All volunteers are asked to enter the park at the 41st Avenue/Vernon Blvd entrance and report to the registration table on OCTOBER 24TH at 10 AM near the field house. By train, take the F to 21st Street/Queensbridge and walk west on 41st Avenue to Vernon Boulevard.

District 22 City Council Debate 10/19

As you may know, one of the positions you'll be voting on in November is the City Council seat for Queens District 22 - that's Astoria! Peter Vallone Jr. (Democrat-Conservative) has occupied that seat for some time, but he has some competition in the form of Lynne Serpe (Green Party) and Gerald Kann (Populist Party).

Rioja Restaurant Week in Astoria

Via a recent Tasting Table mailer, I learned of the upcoming Rioja Restaurant Week.  What is Rioja Restaurant Week?  Well, from October 18-25, restaurants around the city will highlight Rioja wines, complete with wine and food specials (prix fixe menus, or other food and wine deals).  According to their website, two Astoria restaurants will participate:  Sweet Afton and 718.  Could be a good deal - keep an eye on their website for more info and developments.

I will say that on the website, it is a bit dated to separate things by a handful of neighborhoods in Manhattan and then simply "outer boroughs".  These days, these boroughs have made great culinary steps forward, that lumping them all together is a real shame, and short-sighted.  Or, was it simply a rush job on the part of the person/group programming together the drop-down menus?  Who knows, but it looks bad.  Here's hoping they get some feedback on this so they can avoid this in the future.

Dutch Kills Revisited

Though technically not in our lovely neck of the woods, Dutch Kills is worth the trip, and worth mentioning again. Located in the not-so-lovely part of Long Island City that is Jackson Ave, this amazing speakeasy is a fantastic addition to the area. I recently had the good fortune to have drinks with some friends and was blown away.

The sophistication is what completely bowled me over. From the minute a man in vest and bow tie greats you, you’re whisked away to an era that sadly doesn’t exist much these days. The low lights, soft music, warm wood paneled wall, and vintage light fixtures help transform the space into the moody speakeasy. Cocktails are prepared with such dedication and attention to detail- ice is hand formed and specially selected depending on the type of drink prepared, nutmeg freshly grated over special cocktails, and even certain liquors are made in house. Not knowing exactly what we wanted (after all, there are no vodka sodas or Coronas here) a friend of mine wasn’t keen on her uniquely flavored preparation. Within minutes the bartender noticed her glass wasn’t being drained with the same speed as ours, and instantly prepared her another drink more to her liking. That’s service!

Drinks are a very reasonable $10 each (drinks at similar places in the city are often $12-$14), the daily changed drinks menu is easy to navigate, and the staff is warm and attentive. Dutch Kills adds the perfect level of class to Queens and is a great date place or after work spot for those looking for something a little bit different.

Halloween Harvest Festival at Socrates

On Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Socrates Sculpture Park will hold their annual Halloween Harvest Festival.  It's a free event, held rain or shine.  Hopefully it will shine that day!  Following the Festival, stick around for a special outdoor performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, produced by the Red Door Theater Company. Come see Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, and Brom Van Brunt, as they tell the story of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. A blanket or lawn chair is recommended. The performance is free of charge.

Upcoming Shows from Astoria Music and Arts

Those crazy cats over at Astoria Music and Arts have a bunch of events planned in October, the next couple being this Saturday, October 17.  First, Gather at the Gantries takes place at - where else? - Gantry Plaza State Park. The music gets going at 11:30 a.m. and lasts til 4 p.m.. Musical guests include Rebel Rose, Os Clavelitos with Anthony Lanni, Plasma, The Jamies and Little Creatures! It's a free event for for kids of all ages.  Apart from the music, get acquainted with Edible Queens (and accompanying tasties), historical tours by the Queens Historical Society, a trunk show by boutiques Etheral and Little Closets.  Waffles and Dinges and Hallo Berlin will be there with some fab food, too.

The $5 after party, Gather After the Gantries, will be at Shillelagh (30th Ave at 48th Street), starting at 8:30 p.m. There you can hear more music, including Adam Gould Band, AwShockKiss and The Concentrics. Don’t forget that all this week and next, you can take advantage of Queens Restaurant Week. While most restaurants aren’t featuring this special on weekends (except for Punta Dura), you could check it out on Thursday or Friday. There are more than 75 awesome restaurants participating. Personally, I’m checking out Christos Steakhouse, which for $25 per person will be a steal.

Are you into football? Do you like wings? There are at least two great places in Astoria that deliver both at incredible prices. Shoreline Cleanup a Success

In a recent Weekend Edition, I mentioned that the annual Shoreline Cleanup was happening. Well, it did (I was there!), and it was a great success! Green Shores, the organizers, sent out a message to participants, which I will share with you below:

Green Shores NYC thanks everyone who helped make our 5th ANNUAL SHORELINE CLEANUP in Astoria Park a success!

Our partner organizations—the Astoria Park Alliance, Partnership for Parks, and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation—helped the day run smoothly. Volunteers from Forest Hills High School, International High School and members of the Astoria-Long Island City community braved the rain to join us. We filled over 70 bags of trash in only a few hours!

Astoria Love

Has anyone else noticed all the amazing press Astoria is getting these days? I couldn’t be prouder of this little neighborhood that could.


New York Magazine Highlights 31st Avenue


We’ve probably all suspected it, but 31st Ave is certainly becoming quite the destination with a glut of amazing places to shop and eat and its easy central Astoria location. Highlighted favorites include Loveday 31, Candy Plum, Bare Burger, Il Bambino and a few I have to check out like Himalaya Teahouse, Djerdan, and Zenon. Curiously missing is the Astoria staple, Brick, whose charming interiors, bountiful outdoor seating, and classic cuisine all keep us coming back time and time again, so go show them some love too.

Time Out New York Best Neighborhoods

Then came this gem (GEM!) of an article highlighting all the things we already know, including Astoria’s ranks as one of the best ‘hoods in the city. I love this article for its enormous resources, including not only where to shop/eat/drink but things like local singles, resident profiles and lots more info! A great page to bookmark and use over and over again or just to find something new to do in the neighborhood!

Astorian Weekend Edition 24.09.09

Looks like we're heading for a much cooler weekend this week - perhaps fall really is on the way.  Keep an eye out for turning leaves (probably browns at yellows at this point) while you're participating in the Shoreline Cleanup at Astoria Park on Sunday.  This annual event is part of an international effort organized by the American Littoral Society.  Meet by the War Memorial along Shore Blvd in Astoria Park - everyone is welcome, but children must be supervised by an adult.  Wear closed toed shoes, too.  Event lasts from 1-4 p.m.

Afterwards, treat yourself to a cupcake at La Guli's while simultaneously helping kids with cancer.  What a fantastic day you will have had!

Saturday is Museum Day!  Both the Noguchi Museum (9-01 33rd Road) and the Sculpture Center (44-19 Purves Street) are participating.  This means free admission!  All you have to do is complete the Admission Card, download and print it out and you'll be good to go.

Head on over to the Hunters Point Hidden Treasures Market (48th Avenue and Vernon) on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  It's adjacent to the greenmarket and offers recycled and sustainably sourced crafts, jewelry, clothing, and art made by local vendors.

And, if you missed purchasing tickets ahead of time for Le Fooding (at PS1),  you may still be in luck!  The very last tickets will be available at the doors on September 25 and 26.  Take a chance on getting access to this food extravaganza.  It looks pretty awesome.

And one of these evenings, check out the new YOLO (22-55 31st Street) right below the Ditmars subway station.  YOLO stands for "you only live once".  They offer thin crust pizzas, salad, and a few pasta dishes - and a full bar from what I can tell.  The space is new, comfy and shiny, as are the multiple TVs - if you are looking for a nice place to watch the game, give them a try.

Cupcakes for a Cause

Via email, I was made aware of Cupcakes for a Cause. It's simple - buy a cupcake at a participating bakery and they will donate to children's cancer charities. I scanned the list of participating NY bakeries and came across one participant in Astoria: La Guli. Oh, and 1-800-FLOWERS in Astoria is also a participating florist. But flowers aren't nearly as delicious as cupcakes.

The event lasts for a week, from 9/21-27. So head on over to La Guli and getcherself a cupcake!

Astoria, Queens - The Pilot

The New York Television Festival starts Monday and goes through the rest of this week, showcasing new modern and independent television programs, panel discussions, and other events that celebrate television as an art form.

One of the pilots premiering this week is called Astoria, Queens - "Inspired by the Wizard of Oz, four Kansas City twenty-somethings navigate their new lives in the scary, but exciting Emerald City of New York. After a day hanging with a Lindsay Lohan impersonator, shirtless male models, and a half-naked "stranger" who's not sure who he slept with the night before, the roomates question: "Did we do the right thing by moving here."

Introducing Art House Astoria

A really nice organization with a wonderful mission just opened up in Astoria - "to provide quality arts programs to the Astoria community at an affordable price." They offer music and arts classes, both private and group sessions given by qualified NYC based instructors.

Founded by Micah and Jane Burgess, an enthusiastic husband and wife team who are both musical artists - his credentials are in the Jazz Guitar and she specializes in vocal performance - Art House Astoria has something for everyone, from electric bass to drums/percussion, painting, drawing and even creative writing. They've been holding open houses in the last two weeks, so if you're interested in enrolling, contact them soon, as classes start on September 28th.

One of my favorite pet shops in the nabe, The Jumping Bulldog has officially opened its second location for doggie daycare and they’re available on weekends. Meg and I had the pleasure to dine at the Balkh Shish Kabab House and I highly recommend it. Everything is super affordable (under $15 and mostly under $10) and so delicious. I urge you to try their fried pumpkin turnovers, scallion filled dumplings and the lamb kebab (pictured above). Enjoy more yummy sweets at Ovelia, as they roll out new dessert items this week such as the strawberry banana crepe, “spoon sweets” served with Greek yogurt and delicious donut-like “loukomades” topped with Nutella or orange marmalade. Two weeks ago, I told you about the amazing burek that I had at Djerdan. Meg also found them sold at Parrot Coffee Market on Ditmars Blvd in the frozen section. She praised them, saying how delicious and convenient they are to make. Getting To Know...Vesta

On the unlikely corner of 30th avenue and 21st street, a quiet revolution is happening right here in Astoria. The owners of Vesta, long time Astorians, loved the slow food movements happening in neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Carroll Gardens, but found Astoria lacking in such options. With a commitment to our neighborhood, the owners opened Vesta, a restaurant committed to organic (when possible), locally grown, and seasonal foods. I know I personally would be lost without Vesta. Their rotating menu often seems scary at first (where did all those favorites go?) but soon you find a fantastic, seasonally appropriate new dish to swoon over! While you're there, don’t miss the Baby Jesus Cake, a lightly caramelized date cake that is quite possibly one of the best dishes in Astoria, the rotating selection of art, often by local artists, and Vesta's to die for wine selection.

In their spare time, the guys like to check out the movies at Socrates, dinners Mundo and Sweet Afton, or drinks at Hell Gate Social Club.

Astorian Weekend Edition 10.09.09

Fashion week is coming, and Astoria is taking part! Ovelia (34-01 30th Ave) is celebrating fashion week with their 2nd Annual Fashion Forum, featuring local jewelry, leather, and textile artists. Henna tattoos will be available, too! Festivities start at 8 p.m. on Sunday the 13th.  On the Thursday prior, KrisTees (24-01 23rd Avenue) launches more fashion fun during their Fashion's Night Out celebration.

SITE (35-11 34th Ave) hails the back-to-school season with a bunch of new products (the puppets are particularly cute). Stop by and check out what they have to offer!  Inside Astoria (37-20 Ditmars) is another place for fun home goods, too.

Elections are coming up!  I hope you've registered to vote.  On Saturday at 2 p.m., Allison Lichter (Culture Editor, WNYC/WNYC.org) will moderate a City Council District 26 (LIC, Sunnyside, Woodside) candidates' forum focused on issues related to the arts and cultural community, at the Chocolate Factory (5-49 49th Avenue). The other day I stopped by the San Antonio Bakery #2 (36-20 Astoria Blvd South) to have a Chilean hot dog (AKA completa).  Let me tell you - it was even better than I remembered!  So delicious and highly recommended. Make sure you eat it with the accompanying pebre.

One of the absolute best things about living in a place long enough is getting to know a bunch of really talented and creative people. Case in point, long time Astorian Tamara Reynolds. Tamara moved here ten years ago with less than optimistic feelings about our fair neighborhood but then was charmed by the abundance of unique markets, eclectic food choices at every grocery, and all those abundant fruit stands. Starting as just a small dinner party for friends, Sunday Night Dinner eventually grew into a grand, albeit quiet, tradition of family style dinners. Every couple of weeks, Tamara opens her home to strangers, and lovingly prepares amazing meals for a small fee. Several weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend a Mexican Fiesta at her home, complete with knock your socks off guac and fantastic company! SND is a fantastic way to get to know a really authentic and different side of Astoria, and I highly recommend trying it out!

Taking her love for cooking and entertaining one step further, she and SND partner Zora just finished their new cookbook, Forking Fantastic! The book chronicles years of tips and tricks of dinner party hosting, tales of Sunday Night Dinners past, and of course all those tasty meals. I know I couldn’t be more excited to get a copy and try some of their amazing recipes.



In between hosting strangers in her Astoria home and writing a fantastic cookbook, Tamara recommends getting lost in the unique architecture found west of 21st street near 30th ave. Also on her list? The amazing Kabab Café (2512 Steinway), a local institution steeped in shisha tobaccos, domino playing, Egyptian pop music and of course truly amazing food.

Fatty's Celebrates Six Years in Astoria

A hidden treasure that I tried last weekend is Djerdan Serbian cuisine. They have the most amazing burek (pictured above) - which is a pastry filled with a choice of meat, cheese or spinach. Their grilled meats and traditional specialties such as goulash and stuffed peppers bring me back to my mom's kitchen. Simply amazing and very affordable.
